I have always been a loner in the creative process. When I was younger, I wrote music for and played in several bands.

But I always preferred to work on my own with multi-track tape recorders and those early synthesizers.

Now, computer technology allows a solo composer to realize complete arrangements and share them online. I am retired and am not in the music business. So I am not subject to the drama and uncertainties of making a living as a composer.

This site title “Orchestral Synthesis” refers to my passion for electronic sounds combined with a traditional orchestra. For example, the sound of a cello section combined with a synthesizer deep bass is irresistible for me.

I am inspired by classic silent films. Those mostly black and white images from times past hold a special place for me. I know many people share this love of the classics and I’ve wondered what is it about these old movies that makes them so appealing to me.

The storytelling is almost always superb as they had to be uniquely creative about conveying something without speaking. The use of title cards was disruptive so usually kept to a minimum.

For a composer, the attraction is the complete openness of interpretation. I can take then film in any direction I wish. But I find the images evoke certain soundscapes and ambience. So I try to take the notes where they want to go.
